The Best Debutants of 2008-Asin Or Anushka

anushka sharma
2008 was a year of great variety among debutants. Two of the brightest female faces of 2008, Asin and Anushka Sharma came within two weeks of each other. If Asin in 'Ghajini' was an expressions ki dukaan, Anushka Sharma in 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' was far more controlled and reined -in. This model from Bangalore was in no hurry to let us know all the tricks of her trade in one go. Aram se was Anushka. Asin was a storehouse of expressions, a Sridevi on steroids.

And a month earlier we had Mugdha Godse, yet another new feminine flavour for 2008 who made a blasting impact. Bold and uninhibited, she stood her ground in 'Fashion' in spite of an author-backed part for Priyanka Chopra.

A fourth fabulous female debutante came earlier during the year. Prachi Desai with her sweet and tender big-screen debut in 'Rock On' proved television stars do shine in cinema. The myth that television actors falter and fall while making that transition (look at poor Amarr Upadhyay, he is back on television after trying everything on the big screen from horror to Bhojpuri) was broken twice over in 2008. Not just Prachi. But also Rajeev Khandelwal who made a powerful debut in Aamir along with director Rajkumar Gupta who emblazoned his name with a tale of terrorism that traveled the tormented streets of Mumbai in scampering motions.

If 'Aamir' gave us a camera-worthy director in Rajkumar Gupta, two other directors dabbling in terrorism - Nishikant Kamat in 'Mumbai Meri Jaan' and Neeraj Pandey in 'A Wednesday' - came out with flying colours.

Indeed 2008 was the year of demoniacal directorial impact. Abhishek Kapoor who had once acted in a film titled 'Uff Yeh Mohabbat' with his then-girlfriend Twinkle Kapadia in the lead was resurrected as the man behind 'Rock On'. For all practical purposes this was Abhishek's beginning as a director and what a debut!

Ditto Munnabhai writer turned director Abbas Tyrewala, who shone in meteoric motions in the inspiring company of his debut making hero Imran Khan in 'Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na'.

The debutant directors who came during the earlier part of the year like Vijay Krishna Acharya ('Tashan'), Jaideep Sen ('Krazzy 4') and Vivek Sharma ('Bhoothnath') couldn't live up to the hype created around their debut.

But actor Imran Khan did. He was hands-down the male discovery of the year. Sassy, spontaneous, practical and sensible, Imran's freshness of approach to acting was contagious. The nation contracted the Imran virus. Harman Baweja who made his debut on the same day as Imran was far filmier. Like Asin, he knows it all. And doesn't hide it.

Amul butter cartoon on Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

We have seen Amul Butter's creativity from past few years. This time again they have created for Rab ne bana di jodi. Just have a look at this photo.

Anushka feel like 60yr old stucked in 20yr old body

anushka sharma
With a debut with SRK in a Yash Raj Production, this blue eyed girl from Bangalore could not have asked for anything more. We introduce you to Anushka Sharma

What was your reaction when you first met Shah Rukh Khan?

Anushka Sharma: You will not believe that when I first met Shah Rukh Khan on the sets of the film, I could not recognise him. He was in his Surinder Sahni look with a moustache. In fact, it was he who came to me, introduced himself, shook my hands and congratulated me on being part of the project.

When you were first narrated the script of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi , didn’t you have any questions about your character, Tani not recognising her husband?
Anushka Sharma: Yes, I had my apprehensions about the script and I even discussed them with Aditya Chopra. But Shah Rukh Khan played both parts so well that I thought I was acting with two different persons.

If given a choice in real life, would you like to settle down with a person like Raj or Suri?

Anushka Sharma: Suri definitely! Suri is a very nice person. External beauty will not stay forever but internal beauty will. I would like to settle down with a person who will love me more than anyone has ever loved before.

So is Anuskha Sharma similar to Tani in real life?
Anushka Sharma: I am very similar to Tani. I am a sixty year old trapped in a 20 year old body. I am a very boring person. I am very shy at times. But I am comfortable with the people I know, and usually very chatty with them.

Which was your toughest and favourite scene in the film?
Anushka Sharma: Most of my favourite scenes are with Suri. I liked him more than Raj. The toughest scene was when Raj and Tani decide to run away. I had cried so many times when we were rehearsing that I could not cry any more. I was trying really hard to cry.

Which is the best compliment that you have received and from whom?
Anushka Shamra: The best compliment came from Shah Rukh Khan when he thanked me for making Rab Ne… very beautiful and special.

Anushka Hate pani puri ..Can you Believe that?

anushka sharma
A fortnight after her film released, debutant Anushka Sharma is still lapping up all the praise coming her way.

Sitting comfy with a three film contract with YRF, newbie Anushka Sharma talks about Aditya Chopra, SRK and her pet film, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.

Tell us about your first day of shooting.
It was the 16th of May. I remember it clearly, in details. It is the shot where Suri and Taani have just got married and I was sitting with my back to the camera. SRK came as Suri and I didn't recognize him. I was a little nervous, excited and awkward because there were so many people around and I thought I would go blank. But SRK put me completely at ease. I don't know how a film becomes a hit but when we were making it, I knew it would be a hit.

Tell us about working with SRK
SRK is the King of Romance and he makes any scene look novel. He is one of the best people I have met. Even when I am an old lady I will remember him as one of the best people I have met in my life. He is such an experienced actor but such a young guy at heart; he is younger than most teenagers I know! He is so much fun to be with.

We don't know much about Adi. What can you tell us?
Adi is very passionate about his work and cannot see beyond his work. I totally respect that he wants to do his job and not come out. In my opinion, I think that if he would come out, he would be like this big star or celebrity. So, he wants to stay grounded and be able to observe normal, regular and everyday human emotions so he can capture them in his films. He is also very open-minded. I have a three film contract with YRF but it is not rigid. Adi is there to guide me and I am free to do movies outside the banner if something really good comes along. I have been getting a lot of offers but have been really busy with the promotions. I will star reading the scripts once the promotion is over.

Are you happy with your promotion after the release of the movie?
Yes, completely. It is nerve wracking to give interviews and I am glad it has been promoted this way because I could completely focus on my work. I didn't feel the need to talk to the press at that time because what could we have talked about then? How tall I am or how ugly I am? Now, that people have seen the film and they know Taani and me so there are so many things to talk about.

Taani didn't recognize her husband without a moustache. Isn't that illogical?
It is a movie so everything is not supposed to be shown. And what is logic anyway? Now Taani looks through Suri and doesn't notice anything about him at all. And no one would imagine that a simple guy like Suri could become a crazy guy like Raj. Even I didn't recognize Shah Rukh in his Suri avatar.

Did you learn to ride a bike as you do in the movie?
Yes, I learnt to ride a 650 cc bike in a day and I am really proud of myself for that. So I rode the bike. Before the scene, I just asked Shah Rukh what he would do if we fell down. So he said, "Main toh kood jaaonga. Tum ko leke kood jaaonga!" and we fell down. Now, he is so smart that he used his presence of mind and pulled me aside and pushed the bike to the wall otherwise I would have hit the wall and got badly bruised.

And what about the 'golgappa' scene? Weren't you concerned about the calories?
Well, I hate 30 golgappas and I actually hate them. I am metabolically blessed and remain thin no matter what I eat. I can eat anything and everything.

What is your take on being compared to Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor? Who is your competitor?
I don't think it is fair to compare to Deepika because she is two films old and I am a newcomer. But that is bound to happen because we have similar backgrounds: both models from Bangalore and both of us debuted opposite SRK. I don't think I look like Sonam at all, our features are very different! I don't think about competing with anyone because everyone is doing their job to the best they can.

Who are your favourite actresses? Do you have a dream role?
I love Kajol and Rani Mukerji. I have even met Rani. I would love to play Wonderwoman or Superman's female version.

Lastly, Taani ko Suri mein Rab dikhta hai. Who do you feel that way for?
I think 'Tujh mein Rab dikhta hai' means to see the goodness in a person. Honestly, I haven't seen Rab in anyone like that. I am single and I hope I find Rab in somebody soon

I love to play action roles:Anushka Sharma

anushka sharam
Q. How does it feel to be a Bollywood star?

The media attention is too much to handle. Shooting for the movie was easier! Giving interviews have become exhausting both physically and emotionally.

Q. How did you feel when you were offered 'RNBDJ'?

It felt great. Aditya called me in his office and asked me whether I wanted to do the film. I said yes and now I have a three film contract with Yash Raj Films. I am also allowed to do movies outside Yash Raj, if it helps my career.
Q. Tell us something about Aditya Chopra.

Aditya Chopra is passionate about his work and he can’t see anything beyond that. He is a person who wants to remain grounded and be amongst his people. He cares least about being a star director.

Q. What do you do in your free time?

I read a lot. I just completed reading 'Kite Runner', and now I am reading '3 Cups of tea'. I also like listening to music.

Q. Did you listen to 'Rab Ne...' songs?

I love the songs of 'Rab Ne...'. I keep listening to the songs and the magic of the music doesn't seem to wear off!

Q. How many times have you seen 'Rab Ne...'?

I have seen it four times. And I’ve always entered the theatre after the start and came out before the end. But I tell you, the response is just too good. It feels good to have the first hand experience!
Q. Did you actually ride the bike in 'Rab Ne..'?

Yeah, I did and it was a 650 cc bike. I kept asking Shah Rukh what if the bike fells, to which he replied, "Mujhe kya farak padega? I’ll jump and then you have to decide what to do". We did fall during the shooting but Shah Rukh Khan shielded me from the wall. I was saved from being bruised.
Q. In 'Rab Ne...', your character Taani fails to recognise her own husband. Don't you think the idea is far-fetched?

No, I don’t. Taani has always looked through Suri. There is a scene in the movie when Suri tries to change himself and changes his walk slightly, but his wife pays no heed. Taani is justified in not recognizing her husband. She can’t imagine her simple husband who wears glasses, trousers and full sleeve shirts to change into a cool Raj who wears tight jeans, rayban glasses and would enroll himself into dance classes!
Q. There has been comparisons made between you, Asin and Sonam.

I don’t look at competition. I only concentrate on my work. If I think of what others are doing, when will I get time to do my work? As for the resemblance between me and Sonam, I don’t think I look like her at all. She has totally different features.

Q. Any dream role you would like to come your way.

I would love to play a female superman.

Anushka Never Dreamt of becoming An actress

anushka sharma
Anushka Sharma, who debuted opposite Shah Rukh Khan in "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi", says she would like her dream guy to be like Surinder Sahni or Suri, the middle-class nice guy played by the superstar in the film. She also says she never dreamt of becoming an actress.

"I would love to have someone like Suri. He should be a nice man. I believe in having a man who is beautiful and strong from inside ... Inner beauty is most important. But I found Suri to be handsome and good-looking too," Anushka told IANS in an interview.

Directed by Aditya Chopra, "Rab Ne..." is the story of a mismatched couple played by Shah Rukh and Anushka and how the two of them find love in the backdrop of a dance competition.

The model-turned-actress considers herself "fortunate" to have landed a debut with Yash Raj Films and, that too, opposite Shah Rukh, but Anushka says she had never planned to become a Bollywood heroine.

"I never dreamt of becoming an actress; so it is not a dream come true for me," she said.

Anushka, who is under a three-film contract with the Yash Raj banner, said she would be concentrating on those projects for now.

"I have signed a three-film contract with Yash Raj. But I am free to do any other project if I wish," she clarified.

Excerpts from the interview:

Q. How did "Rab Ne .." happen?

A. I started modelling from the age of 15. My photographs were with an agency and Yash Raj got them from it. I was called for an audition along with various other girls. I was selected by the assistant director and then introduced to Adi (Aditya Chopra) for the second audition. He asked me to be as natural as I was in my first audition. I followed his instructions and was finally selected.

Q. So Shah Rukh was not there when you were selected?

A. No, I met him for the first time on the sets.

Q. How was the experience?

A. He was in the get-up of Suri and I couldn't recognise him until he came to me and introduced himself. I was really surprised.

Q. Do you consider it a dream come true to be part of such a huge project?

A. Not really, as I never had the intention to be an actress. It happened out of luck and I consider myself very fortunate to be part of such a big banner in my debut film and to be working with a star like Shah Rukh and a director like Aditya Chopra.

Q. Are you an avid watcher of Yash Raj's films?

A. Yes, I like their movies and the style in which they make them. My favourite films are "Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge" and "Chak De India".

Q. Who are your favourite actors and actresses?

A. Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji.

Q. So what next after "Rab Ne.."? Are you bound by any contract?

A. Yes, I have signed a three- film contract with Yash Raj. But I'm free to do any other project if I wish.

Q. Can you give any details about your forthcoming films?

A. Right now I've no idea about any of the films as nothing has been finalised.

Q. You debuted with the biggest star and one of the biggest production houses of the country. Do you feel that you aren't left with better options in future?

A. No, I think the industry is quite big and there are other big banners and people in the industry with whom I would love to work.

Q. Among the two characters of Suri and Raj played by Shah Rukh in "Rab De..", which one did you like the most?

A. I liked Suri more because he had goodness in his character and was very true. I find those qualities enduring in a human being.

Q. How would you like your dream guy to be?

A. I would love to have someone like Suri. He should be a nice man. I believe in having a man who is beautiful and strong from inside ... Inner beauty is most important. But I found Suri to be handsome and good-looking too.

Deepika Padukone has tough competition in Anushka Sharma?

 Anushka Sharma
Gone are the days when directors and producers only backed projects having senior actresses in them. Playing safe has become passé and giving a fresh perspective to films to make them look convincing in the contemporary times has become the new mantra.

Thus, to attain the fresh appeal, directors are turning towards young promising faces who can hold onto their own even in front of seasoned actors – like Shah Rukh Khan – and give their film a new lease of life.

Gayatri Joshi (Swades), Deepika Padukone (Om Shanti Om) and now Anushka Sharma (Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi)... All three model turned actresses have debuted opposite Shahrukh Khan and bingo, all are totally worth it! The latest girl to take Bollywood by storm is none other than SRK's beautiful Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi co-actor Anushka Sharma.

I don't envy Gauri Khan: Anuskha Sharma

Shah Rukh told me that Adi Chopra believed the film was made by 'Rab'. What's your opinion on the quote?
Absolutely correct. Me being a part of this film is also because of 'Rab' because now that I've done this film, in a strange way I believe that everything that has happened in my life before this has kind of structured to get me to this.

In terms of me moving to Mumbai, me not being too exposed in spite of being in the modelling world for quite some time, etc, all helped me get Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. It was entirely Rab's blessings for all of us, not for me alone.

Will the success of Rab Ne take your feet off the ramp?
This film happened by chance but modelling was something that I always wanted to do. I've never said that I wanted to be Miss World or an actress. I just wanted to be a model walking the ramp. Whether I will return back to the ramp is all up to Rab now. Let's see.

Are you happy with the unhappy response from quite a few critics from the media world?
Yeah, I heard that many critics haven't taken the film very well. But that's fine. Everyone is entitled to their own individual opinion and they are viewers after all. I respect all the critics' opinion.

How critical were your parents after watching the film?
My elder brother will never pay me any compliment because he is harsh. And so is my dad. After watching the film my brother said, "You can act, huh". For my mother, I'm the best in the world. My dad was impressed though.

You made my friend and colleague who was sitting next to me while watching the film cry. Why?
(Laughs) Really? Actually I wanted everyone to cry. My friends called me up saying that they really enjoyed the film and had fun throughout. But in return I asked them whether they cried watching the same. I wanted them to cry. If someone has cried, they are feeling for you and your character. I guess it's nice in a way.

So tell me, are your parents going to look out for a boy like Surider or Raj for your marriage?
(Laughs) My father always says, "You please go and find a boy for yourself because I doubt if I will ever find one for you". I tend to go the hyper way sometimes which is fine because that's my age.

So if I was ever to find someone for me, the guy has to be like Surinder Sahni. If you are dating a rich brat, how far can you go on is my question and where are you going to go?

You want to be with someone who loves you like Suri does, that is unconditionally. He has to be sweet and genuine. I was watching the film and was cursing my character because I failed to understand why Taani isn't falling in love with him.

You envy Gauri Khan then?
(Laughs out loud) No, not at all. They are such a cute couple. I can never think of that.

Ok, would you leave your husband in real life if you find someone else?
For Taani, she didn't marry out of choice but Anushka Sharma is going to marry out of choice. And when I do get married I will never think of leaving my husband.

Now please close your eyes and tell me where do you see Rab when you open your eyes. I know it's me but still go on, tell me.
(Laughs out loud) Yes, it's you in front of me. But on a serious note, you are not seeing Rab in someone; you see the goodness of Rab in a person. Someone who is so correct like Suri doesn't have a single bad bone in his body. He is such a nice man and is so good to everybody. That's what God is like, right?

You are a classic dancer with a classical grace.
Thank you for the compliment and thanks to my Bharatnatyam classes I did till I was in the seventh standard.

My mother always wanted me to learn classical dancing but I kept running away from it. What you've seen on screen is thanks to Shiamak Davar who helped me for one whole month of training.

When do you plan to go to the UK and show your beautiful face to the country which has accepted you and your film with open arms?
I'm booking my flight with you. Let's go together. That's a good idea isn't it? I've never been to the UK and I'd love to go there once.

You don't need to climb the ladder of success because you are so tall.
(Laughs) You're right. But in the film, I wasn't wearing any heels. If I was, I would've looked taller than Shah Rukh.

Have you been offered any toothpaste commercial because your smile kills?
Oh really. I haven't been offered any toothpaste commercial but the day I get an offer, I'll send you a thank you note.

How similar is Anushka to Taani?
In more ways than one. But Anushka right now is very tired and I've been doing these interviews since morning which will go on till 11pm. Please tell me how do these actors do it. Hats off to them.

I have to learn the tricks of the trade. Sometimes it does get tiring to answer the same questions again and again. I must say, your questions are a welcome relief.

I can't keep my eyes off you and I have to say this, will you come out on a date with me?
(Laughs) Yes, I don't mind but on one condition. You don't have to ask me any questions, I will ask you the same question forty times and you'll have to answer it.

Secondly, we will go the Yash Raj canteen outside for our date. Thirdly, you will have to compliment me, talk all the nice things about me and be very sweet with me. If that's what you can do, I'm up for it.

Now you're being conditional here.
I have to, if you want a date with me (laughs).

How about a step forward. Will you marry me Anushka?
(Laughs out loud) Yes but again it will be conditional. You know what, my father may agree to your proposal also because he will be more than willing to say, "Accha hai...koi toh mil gaya...ab meri tension khatam."

Are you going to watch Aamir's Ghajini?
Yes, I am going to watch Aamir Khan's Ghajini. I think it's going to be a good film. It's not about competition, nowadays, the more the films do well, better it is for our industry.

Anushka Sharma leaves SRK impressed

anushka sharma
Newcomer Anushka Sharma debuting opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Aditya Chopra directed, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi has left the King Khan mightily impressed.
The superstar tells us, “To be really honest when I met Anushka I felt that she’s got an amazing amount of confidence, I think she has modeled before this on the ramp, She’s a very pretty girl, very conscientious which I notice is a common trait in the youth of today.

anushka sharmaAll youngsters are very conscientious, very confident and they have a very clear cut thought process, they want to learn but they have a mind of their own and this is an experience I am really finding very interesting in my phase of the career that I am working with youngster who come with an idea which is I would say they speak the language of this generation, they have expressions of this generation I think I am from a different generation and may be I am getting a little old fangled, may be I am getting what people call stylized and mannerised in my acting, may be I am just getting repetitive in my acting.
When I worked with Anushka it made me realize that there is a whole new world of enacting a scene, Anushka in a certain way has helped me a lot with this film lot of people asked me did you direct Anushka because she’s a new comer? I think without knowing Anushka has directed me in the film because she gives a different expression and I am like listen I cannot be going on to the set pattern of how I act I need to react to this girl whose so fresh and different so as an actor I would say she has kept me on my toes and I think she has done a wonderful job because really needed a new character for this film, the film becomes believable for Suri and everybody else in the film because of Anushka, she holds the film together.
anushka
Anushka  is in the certain sense the main protagonist actually at the end of one scene I went up to her and told her ‘thank you for making my film so beautiful’ I think these are the two things I can say about Anushka and wish her All the best, I feel responsible for her career because she is starting of with me. I hope she does a fantastic job. Thank you for teaching me how to act in a different way and keeping me on my toes not just by virtue of being fresh and new, by being taller than me also. I truly from the bottom of my heart pray for her. I hope we have got this film right Adi and myself and it does really good for her and she does some amazing amount of work so we can feel proud that we started her career on celluloid.”

SRK's new girl, Anushka Sharma

She used to be softspoken, bright and studious, but model Anushka Sharma also has what it takes to reach the top in showbiz, say people in this city as she makes her dream debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi" Friday.

While her mentor and fashion guru Prasad Bidappa says Bangalore girl Anushka was always a good learner and he had an inkling that she would do well in the glamour and entertainment industry, her friends say she has always "stood out in the crowd".

"Anushka showed her zeal in learning things fast. She started walking the ramp perfectly just after a few days of guidance. She was agile and had a perfect body language. She was a good learner and worked hard to reach the top. It did not surprise me when she got such a good opportunity in Bollywood, " Bidappa, who also groomed Deepika Padukone, told.

Well-known designer Wendell Rodricks spotted Anushka at an event in Bangalore and saw her potential. He brought her to Mumbai and made her the showstopper in his Les Vamps show at the Lakme India Fashion Week.

After making a mark as a model, Anushka did big assignments for products like Fiat Palio and Silk and Shine products.

A trained bharatanatyam dancer, Anushka is playing a dancer who gets married to a nerd in "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi".

Former model and Kannada actress Andrita Ray says Anushka's entry into filmdom brings hope for others who are trying to make it big in filmdom.

"Certainly this was the most encouraging news for many models in the city who are trying for a foot hold in the film industry, " said Andrita, who forayed into the Kannada film industry with director Mahesh Babu's "Meravanige".

Andrita remembers Anushka as a softspoken girl.

"More than me, some of my best known friends who describe her as one girl who could be noticed even in a big crowd.

“Though I did not have too many interactions with her, I was very happy to see her getting such a big break. And what makes it more exciting is the fact that she was chosen after more than a hundred girls were interviewed, " said Andrita.

Some of Anushka's friends who studied in Mount Carmel College with her say they were not at all surprised that she chose a film career.

"Working in films was her first ambition, " said a friend.

One of her teachers on request of anonymity said she was surprised when she saw Anushka's photograph in a newspaper with Shah Rukh. "She was very studious and I thought she would complete her post graduation in economics, " said the teacher.

What SRK has to say about Anushka

The superstar tells us, "To be really honest when I met Anushka I felt that she's got an amazing amount of confidence, I think she has modeled before this on the ramp, She's a very pretty girl, very conscientious which I notice is a common trait in the youth of today.

Is Anushka Sharma A Star In The Making?

anushka
Anushka makes her debut in this Friday's release, the latest presentation from Yashraj Films. People who know Anushka describe her as the girl who always stood out in the crowd. Apart from modeling, Anushka also learnt Bharatnatyam before she stepped in Bollywood. No wonder, she was a favoured choice to play the role of a dancer in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Standing at the height of 5'9 ft, Anushka got her first big break in the fashion world in 2007 when she walked the ramp as the showstopper for a Wendell Rodericks show. Early this year, when Aditya Chopra decided to return to direction, he auditioned many girls but couldn't find the face he was looking for. Aditya's search ended at Anushka. And now Anushka's journey into the world of fame begins this Friday.
